Tho ohiof attraction at the Athletic Park on Saturday was the. match between Petono and Oriental. 'I'ho victory wont to tho suburban team by 14 points to nil. A rougher game has not been witnessed in Wellington for some time. Petone certainly ployed a goad'game, but against 601110 of the tactics practised the more gontlp Oriental team had not a chance. .During tin! course of the afternoon several of the Oriental players were hurt, one man, Swnnson, being knocked out four times. Two others, Poulter and "Watts, had to be carried oil' the field.
Some time after the game commenced Scott drew, first blood for Petone liy scoring a fry, which Thomas converted, t'eione, 5; Oriental, o.' Later on, a good run o> the part of .Hamilton resulted in thai playor touching down, and increasing the Petono score by three points. Th.e score at half-time was: Petone, 8; Oriental, 0.
In the second spell Oriental made a determined rush down to tho Petono line, but the blues were able to assume the offensive, and came very near to 6coring. Filially;'-.' Connor managed to get across, gaining a try, which Nicholls -was unsuccessful, in converting.. A few minutes afterwards Thomas made a beautiful run up the 'Hue 1 , and scored a well-deserved try. Petone, 14; Oriental', 0. Beyond several halts for men being' temporarily incapacitated, or otherwise hurt, the game was devoid of further incident of note, and closed without the scoj'o being increased beyond the total mentioned above. Playing on, No. 2 Athletic Park, Wellington College defeated Old Boys by 11 points to a. . / . , Tho game was not highly interesting, but College manifestly, had llio better of tho play. Tries were scored for Collogo by Nicol, Hurn, arid Davidson, and Nicholls kicked a,' converting goal. Emerson notched a try for Old Boys. Mr, 0. H. Cleland was referee,
PONEKE (17) V. ATHLETIC (3). Poueke scored an easy win in their Same with Athlrtic at'the Petoiio Recreation Ground. Tho game had only been in progress a few minutes when tho Poneke backs got going, the ball passing through tho hands of.Pollock, Morris, Christophorsoii, and S, Tilyard, who beat his opponent very cleverly,, and scored. Morris failed to convert. Tho Poneke backs were soon attacking again, and a good save -'was made by Dalanioro, the Athletic full-back. Poneke, however, were not to be denied, and from an opening made by' Pollock, who passed to Morris, on the blind side, tho latter scored. Mom's took the kick, niid landed a fine goal from the touch-line.- The next try was also secured by Morris, who again made use of The blind side, but his elt'ort lo add tho major points failed. At halftime the scores stood: Poneke, 11; Athletic, 0. On resuming, Pollock added another try to Poueke's tally by fast following up, which enabled him to score near the corner. The' kick at goal filled. , At this stage Athletic took a turn at attacking, ami a. good forward rush followed, with Se.nnessy, Latham, and Corliss in the van, and a score was narrowly averted by Malan, the Poneke fullback, who just got in his kick in time, nnd found the touch-line. In a line-out in Alhletic's twenty-five a gap was left close in, and Bowie, by a smart throw-in to Pollock, enabled the latter to ground the ball near the comer. The kick at goal failed, and Poneke's score now stood at 17. Prom ; the v kick-out Athlelic backs attacked, bii-; found the Poneke defence very solid. Dalamerc, of ths Athletic team, at this stage made a very good attempt/to pot a goal. At leiigtli, Athletic were given their opportunity to score, and they took advantage of it, Thomson, who had been playing a sound gome throughout, getting over the line. The' kick at goal'failed. The whistle sounded with the scores: Poneke, 17; Athletic, 3. Mr. Tregear was the rei'oree.
TRENTHAM A 28, WELLINGTON 11.
Trentham. A met and easily defeated Wellington on the Duppa Street Reserve, the scores at the conclusion of the game being' Trentham 28, Wellington 11. Packer and M'Kenzie were conspicuous for good work among the soldiers' representatives, while Valentine was in good form for Wellington. Mr. F. Samuel was referee.
. TREN.THAM B 17, SELWYN 0. Selwyn were much over-matched at the Diippa, Street lleservo on Saturday ■when pitted. against Trentham B, the same resulting in an easy victorv for tho latter team by 17 points to nil.* The play of the victors was characterised by some brilliant passing rushes.
