.WELLINGTON CLUB'S TOURNEY
The second round of the Wellington Chess Clubs Championship Tourney resulted as follows:—Barnes 1 v. Fouhy 0 W. E. Mason 1 v. \V. Mackav 0, Tycr 1 v. Still 0, G. P. Anderson 1 v. Kellin" 0, James 1 v. Purchas o,'Davies 1 v Ward 0, andGodtschalk 1 v. A. Clark 0. The fixture S. Gyles v. Lee is outstanding through the latter player being absent in Dunediu. Messrs. Davics, Mason, Godtschalk, Barnes, James, and Tyer are now leading. There- are sixteen competitors for the club's annual "i'ethenck" (handicap) tourney, which commenced last week, when only three of the eight games _ comprising the first round were got off. A fortnight ago we mentioned that tho Wellington Club was having a birthday, haying been founded on July 1, 187 G. In this connection a Canterbury contemporary has the following:—"Tho oldest chess club in New Zealand is the Otngo Chess Club, which was founded fifty-eight years ago. The Ciinterbury Chess Club was fifty-two years of ago in January of this year. The Auckland Chess Club is slightly younger than the Wellington Chess .Club."
Thoro are sixteen competitors in the Wellington South Chess Club's annual handicap tourney, of whom no,fewer than leu have up to the present scored 50 per cent, or more of Inch- fixtures, as lollow :— To Class. 'IV 3,3" D In tho annual handicap chess tourney of the Working Hen's Club (eighteen entries), four competitors aro'unbeaten to date, viz.: Messrs. W. C. White, Eton, 11. Douglas, and D. Wild. Messrs. Barnes, Faulkner, Groig, and Costello, each with one defeat, are in close pursuit.
Mr. H. L. .Tames, a well-known prizewinner at several New Zealand championship congresses, is leading in the current handicap tourney of the Ngaio Chess Club. His score is seven wins and no losses, and he has two more games to play.
The ten-a-sido telegraphic match between tho Waiiganul and Masterton Clubs was to commence on Saturday evening, and is scheduled to finish nc*t Saturday. Last year's contest was won by Wanganui. •
