THE NEW STAR
DANGER OF COLLISION WITH THE EARTH RIDICULED. By Telegrapu.-Prcss Association. Wanganui, June 20. Commenting on the cabled statement by the Astronomer. Royal that there is no danger of a collision between the new star and the earth for "a century or so," Mr. J. T. Ward, director.of the Wanganui Observatory, says, humorously: "Tho Astronomer Royal must have had his tongue in his cheek when speaking. The-nearest star we know of is about twenty-five billion miles away. If the sun were making straight for that star, and the star was a sociable sort, they might imprint a salute upon' ono another in about eighty thousand years. But tho new star is most likely at least a hundred times further away, 60 if all the amenities of the celestial regions were duly observed, this nossiblo reunion is impossible for eight million years."
