HIRAM HUNTER
AND LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS. The Acting-Prime Minister (Sir James Allen) received the following telegram from Christchnrch yesterday:— "Am I disqualified as a candidate for election to any local body'during cur.rency of bond? If so, was that Cabinet's intention?—(Sgd.) Hiram Hunter." The following answer has been forwarded to Mr. Hunter:—"The Acting Prime Minister has asked me to reply to your telegram of to-day, I accordingly reply—Firstly, that the Government in determining the conditions of release of yourself and others did not consider any question of tho result as affecting qualification for election to local authorities. Secondly, it would havo been improper for the Government to take any such question into their consideration. It was wholly irrelevant to the subject matter then decided. Thirdly, the Government docs not advise un questions of qualifications for election to local authorities. A local authority and its advisors are not bound to accept the Government view of any sucli question.—(Sgd.) Francis Bell, Attoniey-Genoral." • •
