At the monthly meeting of tho Wellington Central Union, iield yesterday, Mrs. A. 11. Atkinson presiding, the following resolution was passed: "That this meeting of tho Wellington Central W.C.T.U. regrets that at a time which above all cttay maicea tho observance of a, high standard in public life imperative and easy, a so-callod National Government should, in making appointments to the Legislative Council, have imitated tho vices of • its predecessors, and that the right of tho country to tho best nion available should havo been, flagrantly ignored; that such considerations ius capacity, distinction, and disinterested public service, and evon in a small minority of cases, good character should 'havo been bo largely disregarded that party l;ack3 and mediocrities should huvs been rewarded by both the co-operating politioal parties alike, to at lenst as groat an extent as «vcr bei'ora; and that a Second Chamber, which might havo boon greatly strengthened in tho public estimation and confidence should at this supreme hour of tJho country's and the Empire's need, have been brought lower than evor." Mrs. M'Donald, delegate of the union, continued Tier interesting report on the work of tho Timar'u Convention.
