RED JERSEY APPEAL
RED AND BLUE ARTILLERY BATTLE OF COMFORTS WARLIKE PREPARATIONS CAMPAIGN NOTES The Rod Jersey Appeal organiser, Mr. F. ftasey, is actively engaged iu completing die plans of campaign for llio great Hed and Blue artillery battle, and is meeting with success on" every hand. Sir. Biiscy finds everybody eager anil anxious to assist the boys through the Heel Jersey organisation. Fifteen suburban guns are npw ready for action, nnd others arc urged to be prepared and immediately mobilise their army to fight in the greatest battle of all—the battle of comforts. Battle of the Guns. The" organisation of the Battle of the Guns is almost perfected, lied and Blue Artillery is beinj* massed in many batteries, and the (fuel may begin at any moment. As soon as the. first shot is fired, some interesting cannonading may bo expected. Not only is a -rivalry of toes, in strong evidence; there is also a rivalry of battery cannonaders and gunners. The idea of Hid ]{wl and Blue Artillery is that while our boys in khaki are stemming the tide of attack in. Flanders, those who are left at home will have an opportunity of being equally courageous, and of supporting the actual firingline with a barrigo ot money-shell fired into the coffers of the lied Jersey funds. The Plan of Battle. The Battle of tho Guns may be reduced for the sake of argument to a war of suburbs. The lied area includes _ Oriental Bay, Rosenenth, Hutaitai, Kilbirnje! Maranui, Miramar, Lyall Bay, island Bay, Berlmmpore, IVewtown, Brooklyn, Milchelltown—twelve divisions in all—whose battle array is imposing. As reserves and supports this Army has tho commercial travellers and warehousemen, and battalions of volunteers from the merchants, shipping, and insurance men of Wellington. The Blue Army's position is an inland one. There are many advantageous and commanding heights within its zone of action. Kelburn, Northland, Karori, Wadestown, Thorndon, Ngaio, Khandnllah, Johnsonville, Upper Hull, Lower Hiitt, Petone, and Eastbourne. All these are Blue strong posts. The supports and reserves of this Army are drawn from the banks and professional men, the combined lietailers and the combined Civil Servants.
Campaign Actively Supported. The funds which an being raised by I he Citizens' lied Jersey Appeal Comiriittee are to be used for tho sole purpose of benefiting the boys at the front. Tho chairman of tho committee, Mr. L. O. H. Tripp, desires to make this perfectly clear to the public of Wellington and Suburbs. Every ponny of tho money is for the ljoys, and not one particle goes to tho funds of the Salvation Army, the splendid organisation of which is being used to carry out the work expeditkmsly. Appreciation of Hostels. The' Salvation Army's great work in housing soldiers and eailors on leave has assumed huge proportions in this war. llow the work is appreciated may be judged from tho following incident. Two bluejackets arrived at one of the Army's hostels, and wero undismayed when told that tho placn was full, and that there was no chance of getting j\ bed. "Give us a blanket, skipper, nnd we'll sleep on the deck," they said. "The Army's tho place for us." A little Inter on another bluejacket arrived. The overworked Eed Jersey man met him with the words, "I really cannot take any more. Positively, there is no room." "Woll, captain," said the sailor, "I'm not going to leave this camp. This is tho sliow for me, nnd hero I'll stop." Ho was squeezed in among scores of others, on tho floor of the music-room.
