THE NUMBER NEGLIGIBLE. TII3 Minister of Defence stated in thei House of Representatives on Monday 7 that he had asked the Government Sta- >, tistician for an estimate of tho number , '■ of men of military ago in New Zealand, who had evaded enrolment. The answer was that figures could not be supplied, but the number apoarently was negligible. The officials iiad received thousands of communications, anonyinojisand!-: otherwise, concerning men who were alleged to have evaded enrolment. Investigation had shown almost in every cas» '; that the men named were enrolled. "It is within my knowledge," added the Government Statistician, ''that dozens of men have at different times in different parts of the country boasted that thoy did not ; ntend to serve. Their names have been mbmitted to me. I have found in almost every case that, the men had enrolled and_liad been rpiecred on medical grounds." Hn did i.ot believe that any sood ground existed for the statement that there were laTga numbers of men t till ttnenrolled.
