OPOTIKI FLOOD SUBSIDED
GREAT DAMAGE ,IN THE TOWN,
By Telegraph—Press Association. Opottki, April 11. , ' The flood" subsided last night, and the streets of the town are now dry. The town presents a scene-of great devastation. Most .of the business premises and many residences contain about a. foot of slimy silt on the floors, and this morning the business people ■ aiid residents were busily engaged in clearing the rubbish away and cleaning up. ' Several plate-glass windows were broken; and a small buildina; collapsed liko a house or cards. Fences were broken down, asphalt footpaths torn up. and the surface of the streets swept away. The streets now present the appearance of river beds. The damage to business premises, furnituro, stocks of variouskinds, and losses of live stock, in addition to damage, to public property, amounts to mnriy thousands of pounds. A small bridgo in the town- was swept away by ■ the raging torrent. The flood was the worst'over known : here, and several days, perhaps weeks, must elapse before businese ; becomes normal.' The electrical supply was interrupted yesterday, and the town was in darkness last night. Probably light and power will not bo available for sev- . eral days. :
