MANY APPEALS
MEN DRAWN IN THE BALLOTS
Another long list of appeals was dealt with by the First Wellington Military Service Bonrd yesterday. Mi , . D. (/• A. Cooper, S.M., is chairman of the board, 1 and tho other members are Messrs. 1). M'Lareu and \Y. Perry. William Crawford, clerk, asked for total exemption on siccoitnt of his mother's health and the hardship his leaving would inflict on her. His father had been killed, and his brother was β-t tho war. Appellant had served in Samoa. Decision was reserved.
Leave was granted till May 28 to James Patersou, storeman, Christchurch, for whom an employer's appeal was lodged.
As to cases previously heard, the board announced that that of J. TI Dobson had been adjourned until August, and that the appeals of John Sliiel and B. B. Dockey had been dismissed. . '
An indefinite adjournment was made in the oase of J. J, L. Burke. Examiner of Titles and Assistant Land Registrar, for whom an appeal was made on the iround of public interest. Appeal was made to have Norman F. Wright, chief olerk. in the Discharged Soldiers' Information Department, exempted. It was stated that this large Department was mostly filled with voluntary workers, and that AVright was indispensable because of his special knowledge in tire work of recording. The board reserved decision sine die.
An appeal for Herbert C. Cambridge, mechanical engineer, was adjourned till the next sittings of the lioard. Exemption was sought for David Cashman. shipwright and slip foreman at tne Patent Slip. Evidence given in support of the case was to the effect that a labourer could not be easily taught to do the work. If a mistake was mnde when a re-seel was being placed on the slip, heavy damage could result. Recently when a vessel worth many thousands of pounds was being ~put on the cradle something went wrong, and had he not known how to remedy matters the vessel would have swayed off the slip. The case was adjourned iill to-day. A sine die, adjournment was made in the case of N. Facer, telegraph mechanician, Auckland. ■ The board dismissed an appeal for A. W. Paterson, an employee of Hansford and Mills, contractors.
Leave till June 25 was granted Reginald Cox, butcher, Petone. In the case of an appeal for W. A. Hawkins, wireless operator, decision was reserved sine die.
An adjournment till the next sittings was made in the matter of the appeal of Private George Farrell, an ex-sea-man now in camp.
A postponement till .next sittings was made in the case of William Herbert Rieketts, a voluntary recruit in TrcMtham Camp, who staffed that his family oiroumstances had considerably changed eiineo he enlisted.
The following a.ppoals were allowed hecauso the appellants were under ago: 15. It. Dimock, motor engineer; W. H. Baker, driver; R. T. Esau, ironmonger; W. V. Tynehnm, clerk. Roy R. Te Meroi appealed on the ground, that he vas s a. returned and pensioned soldier discharged as medically unfit. His appeal was allowed. An appeal was made for Francis George Edward Daris, a moulder, on the ground of the shortage of moulders. Witness stated that, if there- was further reduction in tna number of moulders 6lups would ho delayed and might not ho made seaworthy. The case was adjourned till August, and meanwhile information as to ihe state of the trade is te be supplied to the board. Alfred S. Flack, carpenter, who has two brothers nt the- front, and whoso mother is an invalid, appealed. His case was adjourned till the August sittings. Adjournments sine die were, made in the cases of the following cooks ongaged on troopships.—A, Carter, A. J. Lamont, It. L. Beckham, E. W. W. Hyland, and Robert Ellis. 'David Elliott Wilkie, insurancesuperintendent, was appealed for by his employers. It was stated that not only was Wilkie essential, but that if lie were taken away one otthe members of the Munitions and Transport.Board might have to resign his position on the board to take up tho insurance work. Decision was reserved sine die. Richard Houldsworth, Hairdresser and tobacconist, Lainbton Quay, appealed on the ground of undue hardship, and the board reserved its decision. . , Private William Bnsooe, who was doing compulsory home service, asked to be discharged. He stated that at the camp he only peeled potatoes. He wished te return to farming occupations. The case was adjourned till Monday for a report to be obtained from the camp. The board dismissed an appeal by Joseph Herbert Jones, a waterside worker, for whom tho secretary of the Waterside Workers' Union appeared. Henry Havice sought an extension of leave in order to give hiui an opportunity to secure someono to assist his mother in a business. His father had died s recently. Leave till September 24 was granted. ■
