PRICE OF BREAD

DEPUTATION TO THE BOARD OF TRADE ' At a meeting of master bakerß of Wellington, held on Monday, a long discussion took placo upon that universally interesting question—the price of bread. In view of the fact that the price of flour has recently been raised 10s. per ton, tho majority of those present favoured raising the price- of bread, and a deputation was appointed to wait on tho Board of Trade (the authority concerned) to ask that the bakers be allowed to increase the price of bread by a farthiniz a loaf, which would make the price sj|d. per 21b. loaf, delivered. The deputation, consisting of Messrs. W..A. Kcllow, A. F. Tonks, E. Tonks, Craig, and Lawrence, waited on the Board, of Trade yesterday to give expression to their views. Nothing definite was arrived at, .but a further meeting of master bakers is to be hold next week. It is rather a curious anomaly that during tho past year, whilst Wellington has been paying oid. per 21b. loaf, the price in Auckland has been only 5d., and tho freight rates from the flour 'ports of the south to Auckland are heavier than they are to Wellington. It is only during the last few davs that the price of bread lias gone up to s}d. in the northern city.
