TRENTHAM'S RATHER POOR SHOWING

NORTH AND EAST MEET

One of the features of Saturday's cricket at the Basin Reserve was the comparatively small score that Trentham made against Returned Soldiers. Up to tho Brosent tho Returned Soldiers havo put weak toams iu the field, aud it was generally expected that tho really good Tronthnm side would get thorn out cheaply, and then havn ,i holiday at tho wickets. Trentham certainly disposed of Returned Soldiers for a very small score, but at *,hc crease did poorly themselvos, running up only 150 runs for soven wickets. Thomas secured the whole seven of tl.'e camp team's wickets at a cost of unlv 61 runs.

The contest between North and East, promises to be interesting. North have compiled the handy Bcoro of '..'lB runs, and East have knocked off 73 without the losa of a wicket.

BOYS' LEAGUE. THE 'FINAL MATCH. On Saturday Boys' Institute A and St. Cuthbert's A met on Kelburn Park to decide tho winner of the Senior Boys' Cup, both teams being level in ppints'. Boyy Institute won the toss and decided to bat first, and compiled 104. D. Burt was top ecorer with 41. Les Smith batted well for his 17. H. Prince was tho only other player to reach douhlo figures, scoring 10. Tho bowling of St. Cuthbert'e 'was good throughout. Burko secured iivo wickets Tor 38 runs, Turvey two for 24, A. Bolt one for 13, and J , . Hutchings one for 14. St. Cuthbert's so far have 132 runs for four wickets. A. Bolt scored 75 not out. His innings was characterised by careful cricket and good all-round strokes. He did not give a single chance. Jack Hutckiiigs played 'carefully for his 21. C. Hester batted confidently for 21. The bowling of Institute was not up to tho usual standard, the only bowler having any success being A. Tarrant, two for 6. Summing up the first day's play the honours lie with St. Cuthbert's, whoso howlers were good throughout. Their batsmen played tho Institute howling witlr confidence. The fielding of Insti'tute was, if anything, Letter than St. Cuthbert's. As the match has to he played to a finish, great interest is still attached to next Saturday's play, which will take place on Kelburn Park.

OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND. By Telegraph—Press Association. Duncdin, March 16. The interprovincial cricket match between Otago and Southland was commenced on Carisbrook Ground this morning, in fine but dull weather. The home team batted first, and after about four hours , cricket were all disposed of for 313. M'Milleu was top scorer with 157 (not out), including twenty fours. Gallantl made 47. Southland Bcored 85 for the loss of two wickets (Gleeson not out 38, and Poole, 1.b.w., b. Hay, 22), being the principal scorers so far.
