ST. PATRICK'S DAY
IRISHMEN IN FESTIVE MOOD SPORTS AT MEWTOWN PARK l The weather was perfect on Saturday, for the St. Patrick's Day celebrations. Tho result was that Newtown Park,' where tho usual sports were held, wae crowded, tho green, ribbon being conspicuous on coat lapel or blouse of many hundreds.
Mass was celebrated at 9 a.m. at St. Mary of tho Angels', Boulcotfc Street, by the Rev. Father. Hoare. St. Patrick's Day without a procession would bo a very tamo nffair, and the procession on Saturday was a large one. It was led by Bra. A. 11. Carroll, of tho H.A.C.8.5., dressed as an Irish piper, followed by tho Natives 1 Association Band under Lieutenant Herd; then came the St. Patrick's College Cadots, tho New town High School girls, Sti Anne's Convent girls, Nowtowi) (tableau), St. Anne's .Girls' School, Thorndoii Marist Brothers' boys, Boulcott Street Girls' School (tableau), Mariet Brothers' School No. 2 company,- Marist Brothers' School, Newtown (with banner on a decorated lorry), Drum and Fife Band, Marist Brothers' boys (tableau), Marist Brothers' School, Newtown', No. 3 company, combined schools from Kilbirnic, Island Bay, and Sussex Square, Hibernian tableau, Thorndon Convent School girls, Hibernian Society's banner on a decorated lorry, and members of the Hibernian Society in regalia. The clergy was represented by His Grace Archbishop O'Shea, tho Yen. Archdeacon Dcvoy, tho Very Reverend Dean Hills, the Rev. Father Gilbert (rector of St. Patrick's College) and others. The procession was well organised and presented a very ' creditable appearance. The procession marched to Newtown Park, and tho morning was devoted to entertaining tho children,
Sports at tho Park. In tho afternoon the sports for adults were held. Thero:. were a number of side-shows" and other attractions for those who wearied of watching tho runing and jumping. . The proceeds of the gathering go'towards the Catholic Education Fund, and should amount to an 'appreciable sum. . Officials for the day were:—Starter/ and handicapper, Mr. Tom O'Brien; judges, Mr. B.
