BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY
The first meeting of _ the newiyformed council of tho society was held, yesterday afternoon in tho Chamber oi Commerce, Customhouse Quay. The ltev. F. H. Spencer, the society's agent, briefly sketched the objects the ■council hoped to achieve, and reported that tho ltight Hon. W. F. Massey had very willingly consented to fill the position of president. The following gentlemen, drawn chiefly from business circles, will comprise the council:— The Eight Hon. W. F. Massey (president): tho Hon. J. G. \Y. Aitken, Messrs. W. M. Hanay, C. M. Luke, S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., and J. Shirteliffe (vice-presidents); and the committee will be Messrs. W. Allan, Tlios. Ballinger, It. L. Button, Professor Easterfield,. W. J. Helyer, A. Hoby, W. Hopkirk, S. Clrrko Johnson, Dr. Harold Kemp, F. Meadowcroft, G. M'Cartney, J. C. Port, and G. A. Troup. Messrs. Button and M'Cartney were appointed joint-secretaries. The meeting, over which Mr. Tlios. Ballinger presided, dealt with the various Hems of an important agenda paper, Arrangements were made for future meetings and work of the council. The hope was expressed that Wellington will at an early date bocome the head centre for the society's operations in New Zealand, and notwithstanding the war, it was folt tliero was now every prospect that the activities of the society would soon be widely extended.
