FORTNIGHTLY MEETING

Tlio Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), Councillors J. K. Fitzgerald, R. A. Wright, W. llildretli, J. Castle, C. ,13.-Norwood, J. O. Shorland, M. F. Luckie, L. M'Kenzie, A. Veitch, A. 11. Atkinson, W. H. Bennett; J. Godber, G. Frost, and W. H. P. Barber were present at the meeting of the City Council last evening. Finance. The following recommendations of the Finance Committee were adopted: —That the council confirm {he action of His Worship the Mayor and the City Engineer in agreeing to permit iho temporary cheese store being erected by the Harbour Board at the King's Wharf breastwork to remain until such time as it is found necessary 'to erect t lit! permanent brick building. That the application of the Island Day Bowling Club for the remission of general rates on the club property te date from October 1, 1917, instead of April 1, 1918, be not entertained, as the City Solicitor advises that tho proposal is contrary to law. That the City Engineer be authorised to effect urgent and desirable improvements at Plinimer's Steps. That an application for tho exemption of the portion .of Woolconibo Stret, between Ingestre and Abel Smith Streets, from the provisions of section 117 of the Public Works-Act, 1908, be not entertained.

That the Wellington Citizens' Red Triangle Day Committee be granted authority to hold a "copper trail" from some point in Willis Street' on March 15.

That tho council appeal against the decision of tho Supreme Court on the. granting of an injunction preventing the extension of the Karon cemetery iiu land recently purchased for that purpose. Tramwaye Mattpre.

On the recommendation of .the Tramways Committee tho following proposals were agreed to: —

"That, owing to the output at tbo tramways power-station having reached the limits of maximum supply, no further power connections be granted, 8 " as to avoid further, overloading of tho tramway power station plant. "The committee forwarded a report from the Tramways Manager on tho suggestion, made at tho last meeting of the council, that a temporary tram stop should be established during rushhours at Bunny Street, for the convenience of the employees ': of the Government Printing Office, and recommended that the Tramway Manager's report be adopted by the council. The tramway manager said he. was unable to recommend the adoption of this suggestion for the following reasons:— 1. An additional stopping-placfe during busy traffio hours would curtail the running, which is already limited un the majority of,the routes. 2. The Lambton Station stopping-place with waiting shed is only sevwity-fivp yards from tho main door of the Printing Office. 3. The use of stepping places at. certain hours only is liable to result in accident. 4. The present stopping-place has proved a decided advantage to the residents of the locality. Tho report was adontcd. ■

Public Health. The Public Health Committee called attention to the more satisfactory condition of the city's milk supply, as recently pvidenced by the jnoro favourable ireports of the milk inspector and 'the decline in the number of prosecutions; and expressed the opinion that the great improvement is in a largo measure duo to the help which the City Council has received from the just, firm and consistent 1 administration or the law by Mr. M'Carthy, Stipendiary Magistrate. "That applications are to be. invited for the position of caretaker of tho municipal abattoir, rendered vacant by tho appointment of Mr. J. H. Wood to the managership of the Christchurch City Abattoir. , . , '

Outlying Districts. i The Outlying Districts Committee reported as follows:— "That provision be made on next year's estimates for. the- improvement to that portion of Melbourne Road lying between A.vou and Thames Streets, and also that the petitioners for the improvement bo informed that the council hope to have the works carried out before" the coming winter.

"That the sum of £50 be placed on next year's estimates for the construction of a stornnvater drain from Barnard Street, Highland Park Estate, as recommended."l The roport was adopted. ■ ' By-Laws.

The following recommendations of the By-laws Committee were adopted :— "That the fruit shop-keepers who petitioned the council to prohibit fruit hawkers .from plying their calling in the principal streets and within fifty yards of such streets be informed that the city solicitor has advised that such a by-law would not be valid; but that the council will give instructions that the existing by-laws on the subject are to be enforced. "That the council of the Fire Underwriters' Association of New Zealand be informed that the council cannot agree to the adoption of a system of hTliflg Bowser petrol storage tanks from.the footpath kerb, until they arrange for the spirit to be delivered in a specially constructed vehicle instead of in tins." Reserves.

The following recommendations of the Reserves Committee were agreed to:—

"That Messrs. Murrell and'Lamberg be thanked for their of penguins to the Wellington zoological collection.

'"That the Kolburn Ladies' Croquet Club be informed that their application for tlie construction of croquet lawns on the southern (unformed) portion of Kelburn Park will be considered when the estimates for next year's ,-work are being prepared. "That authority be granted to an applicant to remove certain dead pine trees in the Botanical' Gardens, for firewood, subjeot to his carrying out the work under the supervision and to the satisfaction of the acting curator, and also subject to his indemnifying the council against any damage that may be occasioned in their removal.

"That the Wellington-, Cricket Association be granted permission to charge sixpence for admission to the Basin Eeserve on March 2 and 9, for .club matches, and to charge the sum of one shilling for admission on each of the following days, viz., March 30, and April 1 and 2, for the match Auckland v. Wellington, subject in both cases to the usual conditions."

Tho committee reported that they had arranged for the purchaso of a pair of young tigers from Mr. D. Bostock, of Sydney, for tho sum of £75, delivered at Sydney. The bulk of the money is being raised by subscription, nnart from the corporation's finances. r
