A laying competition has.been in progress in.connection with the Wairarapa Egg Circle for the last eleven months. With one month to go, Mr. T. W. Barnes 1 is leading with a White Leghorn. •
It is ospected that football in the Wairarapa'will be confined almost entirely in. 'the coming season to the .third grade. .''.'•'
A shield bowling match was played on Saturday at Eketahuna between the Eketahuna and Masterton "A" teams. The formes' won by ten points. v Blackberries ■ are ' more plentiful in the neighbourhood of Masterton this season than they have been for some years past.
At a meeting of\ the AVairarapa Hydro-Electric Investigation Committee the reports of Messrs. Templiii and Toogood with regard' to reticulation and power demand, and a supplementary/ report by Sir. H. W. Cook, were read. It was decided that a sub-com-mittee wait upon Mr. Parry, of tho Public Works Department, to obtain his views and criticism of the reports. A scheme of contribution by local bodies to meet the. preliminary expenses was approved. The liabilities incurred to.date amount to £431 19s. 10d.
A sum of £86 was taken at the patriotic shop in Masterton on Saturday iu aid of the lied Cross funds. The Mayor and several. members of the Mastertou -Borough Council will visit Lake Waikaieinoana this week in company with delegates from 'other local bodies.
In a cricket match played between a team from tho Feathorston_ Camp and a local combination the latter won by eight wicket's. The soldiers compiled 159 runs, and Masterton secured 165 for tho loss of three wickets.
A class for the teaching of French has been opened at the MasWton Technical School.
Tho consent of the Minister of Health has been obtained to the'erection of a new ward at the Masterton ./Hospital, to cost £5530. Mr. H. Higginson has purchased the 'property of the late Mr. Henry Burling in the Alfredton district at £12 per acre. The deer-stalking season opens in the Wairarapa on March 29. Deer are very numerous in the outlying districts.
Preparations arc being made for a big "Red Triangle" day in the Wai- , rarapa on March 16. The Congregational Chnroh in Masterton' has for some time past been without the services of a clergyman. It is expected that the pulpit .vacancy will shortly be filled. A propositi lias becii made for the formation of a company acquire the whole of.the. saleyards in the AVaira- . rapa. Mr. AV. E. C. Tylee, a well-known settler of Makuri, has purchased the "Llandaff" homestead, near Masterton, wlicro ho intends taking up his residence.
