THE GERMAN COLONIES
THEIR RETENTION URGED.
"This chamber heartily endorses and supports tho policy indicated by the Rt. Hon. the Prime Minuter in regard to the disposal of the German co'ouies in tho Pacific." The above motion was received yesterday by the Wellington Contra! Chamber of Commerce from the South Canterbury Chamber, which asked for its endorsement.
Mr. H. Hart said the matter was one for the diplomats to' settle at the. Peace Conference. The retention of the German colonies was a very open question, and he was sure that no one wished to tie the hands of our statesmen ' Mr. i. S. Barton said that after all it was the one point that did affect them vitally. It was not merely academic on their part. Mr. Hart said that the difficulty, was one, to be settled at tho Peace Conferonce, as such questions would bo considered in tho light of the. of the Empire, not a portion of tho Empire. After all. we were only one million. Australia had five millions, and the rest of tho Empire forty millions. ' Mr. Barton moved that the motion be endorsed. This was seconded by Mr. Hardic-Shaw and carried.
