MASTERTON NOTES Tho Masterton Co-operative Dairy Company has decided to make, an advance of Is. sd. per lb. for February supplies of butter-fat. The commercial travellers are arranging a glee party to give an evening performance- in the park during Show week, in aid of the surprise packet crusade. ■ The tender of Mr. A. W. Birss, of Oarterton, has been accepted for tho provision of soft drinks at the Mastertou Show. Tho Inspector of Stock intends taking proceedings against persons offering vermin-infected sheep for sale in the public saleyards after February 15. A meeting .of owners of tractionengines is to be held in Masterton on Tuesday, to consider demands made by drivers of engines, and to frame coun-ter-proposals. Mr. W. E. C. Tyler, of Pahiatua, has donated a cup valued at 14gns. for competition in the freezing classes at the Masterton A. and P. Show.
The Wheat Controller at Christchurch has telegraphed the Wairarapa Wheat Committee that a steamer arriving shortly will relieve the shortage of corn sacks. The price, however, has advanced at least threepence since the last sales were made in Canterbury. This is largely due to the increased freight chr.rges. A Masterton lad, who escaped recently from an industrial school, was arrested op Sunday at his lionie. -.- The Masterton A. and P. Association 'has at present a credit balance of £583 19s. Mr. J. C. Ewington has been appointed to represent the Masterton. Co-operative Dairy Company at a conference of factory-owners to be held at Pfllinerston this week to consider matters affecting the butter industry. The entries for the Mnsterton ram fair .this, year total 2D29, compared with 2340 'last year. The tender of Mr. A. A. Renner, of Wellington, at £6431, has been accepted for the erection of a bridge over the Lower Tauhcrenikau River. . At a meeting of the directors of the Masterton Co-operative Dairy Company on Saturday it was reported that only a limited quantity of benzine, could be procured from the importers, and - only . at constantly-increasing prices. The point was stressed that dairymen might be left without power to drive their milking-machines.
The- Masterton A. fnd P. Association has appointed two delegates to attend a conference at Wellington on February 27, to discuss the incidence of the amusement tax. The association has decided not to pass the tax on to the nublic at the coming show. In shield matches played in connection wi'tlr the Wairarapa bowling centre on Saturday, Masterton A defeated Park, and Masterton B was beaten by Eketahuna.
