MR. LUKE'S MEETING
Sir, —As one who was present at Mr. Luke's meeting, and one who has attended many political meetings in "Wellington, 1 could not help being struck with the fact the rowdy element are now allowed to have things all their own way, and the quiefc-tliinkiup; section retrain from attending. This is very much to be deplored, and will have a bad effect on the class of candidates whom the public expect to come forward, and who arc required at a time like this. Mr. Luke's speech was practical and straightforward; it was an honest speech from an honest man, and I wish him every success, imfc though I am quite confident he has a large majority behind him his supporters did not back him up last night as they should have done. _ Then after Professor MacKenzie's exhibition I could not help thinking if his manner and attitude are the result of ■university education in New Zealand we are wasting large sums of money that might be. more profitably used. He seemed to think w : e want a change of Government, but it seems to _me a change is more urgently required at the university. Mr. von Haast struck the right note. This ip not the time for promoting domestic trouble and discord, but a timo when loyal and patriotic citizens should sink their differences,'and do everything possible to strengthen the hands of the Government.—l am, etc., . WIN THE WAR. February 8.
