TREATMENT OF ALIENS

Sir,—Your suggested treatment ofaliens in our midst, as set out in your excellent leader of December 15, must appeal to all who regard the safety of the community as paramount to "tho comfort of our enemy. Our Government close their eyes to the innate character of our enemy aliens. Unless tim people of New Zealand compel the Government to wake up and intern all untialiiralised enemy aliens, and also those Germans who continually, when under the influence of drink, express their contempt and .hatred for us, but who nevertheless are allowed to roam at largo, some fine- day it will be discovered that these are Him spies, and that they have been instrumental iu bringing about some terrible disaster.

There is very little to be feared from the friendless, illiterate, brainless typo of Teutons, but our Government, for appearance sake, has 'safely interned them, while the. highly connected, highly educated, brainy Germans, with their influential political friends, they allow to remain at large. This present war has caused ail thinking persons to regard the Huns ds nothing better, than stealthy beasts of prey—sly, cunning, cruel, and only waiting' for the opportune moment to pounce on their unexpecting quarry. Is not this the manner in which they overran Belgium and France?! By reason of centuries of "kultur" in refinement of cruelty the Hun of to-day is a mors dangerous, deceitful, and cruel brute than were his barbarous ancestors a. thousand years since. For a lifetime a German may livo among civilised people, partake of their hospitality, may marry an English woman, and may be regarded as an inoffensive member of society: but when once the "day. comes," like the hand-fed tiger who tastes blood for the first time, ho becomes a devil incarnate, and will allow nothing to stand between himself and his country. These are the men who after signing the naturalisation formt, "which they regard as so much waste paper," are referred to by our politicians as "loyal Britishers," ~ quite overlooking the fact that a Hun, to ba ft loyal Britisher, must per force be a German traitor. By reason of his national creed, a German can never turu against his country, while there is no nation in the world more under tho power of their creed than are the Teutons. The Kaiser, the country, and God, or, more correctly speaking, tho Devil, constitute the Hun Trinity. And by reason of the fact that from their mothers' breasts they imbibe this religion, and their intense hatred of. the British (which, as they grow older, is so incorporated into their characters), is it to be wondered that tho Eun will deceive, lie, assume friend-

ship, and commit any siu or crime for the furtherance of the interests of his. Trinity?

With the above knowledge of the German religion and character, it is incomprehensible why our Government permits so many enemy aliens (who are practically new arrivals in New Zealand) to be at large. Despite the innumerable facts daily .coming to hand, proving that the Huns are no more lo bo trusted than the treacherous hyena, our Ministers insist that every German must be regarded as loyal until proved to the contrary. What would those politicians say if asked whether a pet tiger would be allowed to roam at large and be regarded as "loyal" until he showed his true character? What is the difference between a Tirpitz and a tiger? Have the whole tiger race throughout the world during the last decade caused one tithe of tho deaths and misery that are directly attributable to Tirpitz? The tiger tha; may kill a man is immediately shot down, whereas a German could give information that might lead to the iosd of a whole convoy of our brave soldiers, and the chances are he would never bo found out, but would internally sniilo when being spoken of by our Ministers as a loyal British subject, Tho Government since the war started has permitted these enemy alieus to roam at large. —I am, etc., RETURNED SOLDIER.
