WELLINGTON RACES
DESERT GOLD BEATEN MENELAUS WINS THE BIG HANDICAP DOURO CUP WON BY EURIPOS There was a very large attendance for the concluding day's racipg at Trentham. Thousands made the journoy by road, and the railways carried a very large number. Tho course and grounds wore in perfect order, snd tho weather was ideal. Tho racing was good, and.Mr. Ooylo got some close finishes. Only two favourites were successful during the day, but most of the other winners were well backed, so the majority of investors' fared well. The defeat of Desert.Gold was not tho surprise such a happening has occasioned in the past, for it was recognised that the former may have lost her brilliancy owing to having racod over longer courses lately. The win of Croesus was well received by tho crowd, and tho half-brother to Desert. Gold got a good reception on returning to weigh in. Menelans scored In the big handicap, and appears to be at his best again. The favourite (Nobleman) got all tho worst of the luck, and was hardly handled to the best of advantage. Demos proved'himself a 6mart youngster by winning the Fitzherbert Handicap from end to end. Heavy speculation took place on the diflerent events, and in the big handicap tho total was little short of£lo,ooo.
For tho day £ 56,954 was put through tho totalisator. On the second day last year the amount was £58,468 10s. For the first two days last year £100,667 was handled, and for the two days this year £102,123105. Eobur, Battle Song, and Missouri, who strange to say had tho three'leading horsemen in the saddle, were tho public fancies in the Hungary Welter Handicap. Missouri, Matilda, and Imarlbbon wero the leading division going down tho back, with Battle Song, Majeßtikofl.-and tho favourite handy. At tho half-mile Deeley eased Missouri, and Matilda led into the straight. Eobur next appeared, and after a good finish won by a head from Matilda, with Missouri a length away, and in a line came Majestikoff. Battle Song, Consultation, and Kimbolton;
Glenroy was a good favourite for the Open Weltor Handicap, but any chance he had was spoilt by an indifferent start. At the barrier-rise Wishful got all the best of the jump out, and he led all the way. Mascot finished well, and just failed to reach Sweet Tipperary. An outsider in Pariform was fourth, and then came Gold Soult, Comely, and Glonroy, with Multicipal whipping the field. Demos and Eleus looked to stand out in the Htzherbert .Handicap, and they were the host backed on the machine. They both 'began smartly, and with Oyresian and Heathercote wore prominent as they raced on to the oourse proper. Then Domoß shot out, but he had to bo hard ridden to beat War March, who finished very fast. Heathercote was close up, and then came Eleus and, Oyresian. Backers wanted nothing but Nobleman in the Wellington Racing Olub Handioap, and they got a good run for their money under adverse circumstances, for when tho barrier went up the favourite dwelt on the mark and lost a lot of ground. Square Deal went out with a break, and sot a very fast pace down the baok, but at the half-milo the favourite ran up to him and led into tho rtraight. His big effort then told and Red Ribbon took charge only to be displaced by Menelaus, who won comfortably from Adjutant, with Red Ribbon next and Miss de Val and Nobleman next.
None of the well-backed division got a place in the Camp Handicap. Post Hasto, Engari, and Lovesick were the favourites, but the two latter got badly away, and Post Hasto had to cover a lot of ground, 'and did well to get fourth. H. Telford supplied tho first and qeoond places, with the hitherto disappointing Association and Street Singer, with-' Galore third, and the favourite next.
The Douro Cup provided a -very exciting finish between the two first favourites. Paddington Green carried the most money, and., after being troublesome at the harrier he got out well and went down tho back in front, with Rajput and Idyllic. At the turn into tho straight the favourite was still in charge, but Euripos then challenged him. and the -pair had a dingdong set-to, In tho last few strides Euripos wore down the favourite, and won by a head. Quinn's Post, who had been prominent throughout was two longths away third and then oame Cooing and Bagdad. Tho latter got a very bad passage, but finished very strongly. When the horses paraded for the Kolburn Plate all eyes were 'n 'Desert Gold, but Croesus also had plenty, of admirers. The, pair started first and second favourites, with Desert Gold at her usual short price. The pair jumped out smartly, but Croesus was showing clear when half the journey had been covered.. From this .out. the lead:*' had it all-his own way, and won by a couple of lengths, while BoPeep got up and beat the favourite for second place. Prior' to the start Demagogue bolted, and threw his rider. I\ Corlett, who waß taken to the Hospital. 0. Eeed subsequently took tho -mount. ', Public form " was badly upset in the concluding event, in which- Nanna won well from Wrestler. ■ The last-named anil ■ Chimera woro the favourites, while Nanna and . Ctrowhurst also ' had o\jer four figures invested"' on their chances. ' Tho winner jumped ont smartly, and-was not headed on the journcv. Her form on Saturday wasthe subject of an inquiry earlier in tho day, but' no action was taken.
