THE PEOPLE'S SAVINGS

POST OFFICE RETURNS. The Postmaster-General (Sir Joseph Ward) last night made available the figures for tho Post Office Savings Bank for the month of December, 1917. "It will be seen," ho said, "that there is an excess of deposits over withdrawals of £343,660, as compared with £236,137 for December, 1916. Considering that we arc in the fourth year of the war, and that very heavy withdrawals have been made for the purpose of enabling small depositors to invest in the last war loan and in war loan certificates, it will be seen that this index is a healthy one. The total amount of deposits in the month of December was £1,405,511. If that average were maintained for tho wholo of the year it would amoisflt to £17,000,000 in tho year. The average may or may not be maintained, hut in any cas9 the figures are a clear indication that there is a considerable amount of money in small amounts in tho country available for savings."
