THIRD WELLINGTON BOARD
CASES DEALT WITH YESTERDAY
The Third Wellington Military Service Board sat yesterday. Mr. W. S. Moorhouso presided, nnd with him were Messrs. A. O'L. C'onsidine and 51. J. Mack. Captain P. Baldwin represented the military authorities.
The appeal of a Christadelphian, Norman Robert Alderson, was allowed. Superintendent Talt, of the Wellington City Fire Briga*, appealed for the exemption of Alfred E. L. Jeffries (brigadesman, Newtown). Jeffries also appealed for family reasons. Superintendent. Tait said that the brigade was short of men, snd had great difficulty in obtaining the services of suita.ble recruits. The board adjourned the appenl for three months. The board heard an employer's anneal lodged on behalf of Kenneth B. Bain (manager. State Fire Insurance Office. Taranaki). In the time of a previous adjournment for two months the 1-c----partment had been unable to secure a substitute. Of 5o men who had been employed by the Department in Wellington before the war. only 19 were now left. Six of the 19 were medical rejects, and two were returned men. Tlie business of the Department, on the other hand, had increased by 31 per cent, since the beginning of the war. If the operations of the office in the Taranaki district were not carried en extensively enough, producers would be unable to'get "cover" for produce m ro!d fitnraae. They could not get "cover" from private insurance eoninanies. because the private companies had already reached or exceeded their limit. The board adjourned the case to Jnmiarv 23. Tho 'Wellineton Woollen Company. Petone, appealed for the exemption of Horace Blacker (wool carder) and William Langridie (wool spinner). Mr. A. W T ." Blair, who represented the company, said that the woollen industry was an essential one, and tlie company had a number of Government contracts in hand. Tlie men appealed for were experts, who could not be ieplaced. Adjournments for three months were Rr The e case of Charles F. G. Tasker, apprentice marine engineer, was cdjourned for three months. William Joseph Potts, formerlv publisher of "New Zealand Truth," and at present in the CI Camp, had his case adjourned for three months. \fter an adjournment of three months, the case of John Sheil (an employee of the Meat Export Company) wan reviewed. The appellant was tho sole support of his mother, two brothers asr'-d 0 and 11, and a sister aged 13 He had no brothers older than himself. A further adionrnment of months was granted. Oscar Alexander B. Brown, carrying on a business at Upper Hutt tor his mother and for two brothers on active service, had his case further adjourned for three months. James Cairns Heigie, sheep farmer. Lower Hutt, had also been previously before the board, and had been given time to dispose of his property. Apnellant was a Second Division mail. Tlip appeal was adjourned till Annl 1. The father of Rifleman C. Harris, Details, Trentham, appealed for that soldier's exemption. Tlie appellant was sixty years of age, and in illhealth, and he claimed that he was unable to run his farm without us son's aid. One son had been killed at the front, and another had been injured. Two daughters bad been doing the hard manual labour of the farm since the son, on whose behalf tho appeal was lodged, had gone into camp. The chairman informed the appellant that the hoard had no power to grant exemption to a soldier. Threo months! leave was granted. John Thomas an, coppersmith, had previously beui before tho board, and his case' had been adjourned for three months. Yesterday he claimed' that during most of his time he was engaged in work for ocean-going vessels. The employer, Mr. Dutch, said that he had not been able to replace Cowan by another man. The appeal was adjourned for three months. Walter Herbert Garbutt, taxi-driver, claimed to he an American citizen, and not a reservist. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, of British parents, who were naturalised after his birth. The case was adjourned for further investigation. Ernest G. Osborn, milkman, had threo brothers at the front, and was a married man. His case was adjourned for three months.
The D Million Boot Company appealed for fie exemption of Timothy Harold Langley, manager of their factory. Langley was a member of a family with an excellent record of service. One brother was on home defence in England, another was in camp, another had been discharged after service, another was a leather expert, engaged in war work, another was a member uf the Flying Corps, another had been wounded at Suvla Bay, auother had been twice wounded, and yot another was in France. Since the war began the company had to replace sixteen members of a staff of eighteen. Langley was classed CI. The ease was adjourned sine die.
David Sullivan, driver, Island Bay, was granted leave till February 13. W. 11. Jackson, juii., carpenter, Lower Hutt, appealed for family reasons. His case was adjourned till the first sitting in February. David Bohan, tea merchant, said that, he had enlisted, and had been turned down, and told that he would not be called upon again. Later, he was classed CI. His unfitness was due to a gunshot wound in tho hand. He had no objection whatever to serving, but he wanted to save his business as much as possible. Therefore, ho was anxious that he should not be sent into camp only to be turned out again. Tho board recommended that the appellant be re-examined.
