DISAPPOINTED SOLDIERS
A CONTRADICTION,
In last Monday's issue of The Dominion, under the heading "Disappointed Soldiers," reference-was made to the fact that in many cases soldiers from the training camps on Christmae leave had been disappointed owing to being iinablo to securo berths on the steamers that would have taken them to their homes. It was further stated that the shipping companies had run special steamers for the benefit of the men and had done their best to meet the needs of the situation, but that the Defence Department had not co-operat-ed by releasing the first hatches of men on December 17, instead of December 19, as had been suggested. Mr. \V. A. Kennedy, local manager of the U.S.S. Company, now writes emphntically contradicting tho statement that the Defence Department had refused to act on a suggestion made as to the men breaking camp earlier than December 19.
"This statement, so far aa my <wmpany is concerned," Mr. Kennedy fays, "is entirely unauthorised, as; well as heing untrue, no such suggestion .having been made by us to the Defence: authorities, and, iii any case, the release of tho men from camp on December 17 instead of December 19, would not in any way havo affected the position." .
