JERUSALEM TAKEN
Sir, —In your interesting and widolyciroulated paper of December 11, 1917, in the, brief history of Jerusalem given, you stato that it was taken by David, 1048 8.0. At tho present timeit is most interesting to be reminded jvhon Jerusalem was taken from David, or the Israelite nation. That took place B.C. 602. In tho margin of Dan. 1:7 and Jero. 25:1 tho year given is (iO6 8.C., the explanation of this being I that Jesus was 30 years of age, while, ' the marginal chronology gives it a.d. 26, which shows us a difference of four yciu-s. So we may tako the .authority to change tho year 606 B.C. in Dan. 1:7 to (502 n.c." The full account'of the capture and overthrow of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar is given in 2
Cliron. '36: See margin of verse 6. Tho year is again givcu as 606 n.c, and should bo 602 B.C. It was a very difficult lesson for Nebuchadnezzar to learn, as it is with many to-day, that "the Host High rulcth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever He will." (Dan, .1:25, Jere. 27:5, 6). On account of Israel's wicked incompetcuoy
through disobedience, the Kingdom was taken from them and given to the- King of Babylon. All this was foretold to take place. Seo Lov. 26:28s "I, oven I, will chastise you seven times for your sins." Seven times are taken by some to mean severity, ,%s was the caso of the fiery furnace, which was to be heated "seven times more than it was wont to bo heated." Others think that the term "seven time's" means duration, as in the case of Lev. 25:8, and Dan. 4:16. If we begin the chastisement of the nation of Israel in 602 8.C., and reckon the Bcvcn timcß as seven phophetical years of 360 years each, then we get the number of years to he 2520. Our beginning of the year should be in September and not January, and this year would bo 1918, to which add 602, and wo havo the limit of the Jewish chastisement to 2520 years fulfilled by tho fall of Jerusalem this week. Take another Scriptural prophecy with regard to the nations. The Gentile Nebuchadneraar, as the first, and head o? the Gentile Kingdom of the world, was given the ruling power, as before stated, in the year b.o. 602.. He was told that he would be like a wild beast, as represented by a liou, for seven timea, which Josephus calls seven years. This in prophecy would bo v 2520 years, and points very strikingly "to tho treading down of Jerusalem by the Gentiles ta bo ending. Tho prayer taught by Jesus, and repeated all along the centures, "Thy kingdom come, will soon, lie an event to take placo, after the. citizens and tho territory are prepared. (Rev. 22:3.? But tho world dreams, along, not knowing tho signs of the times, as it was in tho days of Noah and Lot. Luko 17:26-80.-1 am, etc., DAVID NIELD. Wellington, Decomber 15. Sir, —Like your correspondent "Brit," I found your leader of last Thursday on the Jews and Palestina extremely interesting. IBut it is hardly convincing to be told on the authority of a "very little knowledge of Scripture" that Israelites and Jews must still be held strictly separate. Does the Now Testament ever distinguish between them? St. Paul said: "I verily am a man whioh am a Jew" j ho also spoko of himself as an Israelite. Your leader shows that you are well fortified in your possession, of the Jewish Cyclopaedia. For the benefit of those interested, may I further refer to the latest Encyclopaedia Britannicft artiolo on the Anglo-Israelite Theory—a compact and adequate treatment of the theory.—l am, etc, SCOT.
