SIR JOSEPH WARD IN THE KING COUNTRY

DEPUTATIONS ON MANY . SUBJECTS. By Telesraph-Presa Association. Tβ Kuiti, December 7. This has been a red letter day in the King Country oh account of the visit of Sir Joseph Ward to the district. He arrived by the Main Trunk train in the early morning, and was met by the Mayor, the member for the district, and prominent members of the Borough Council and County Council.

At 9 o'clock a start was made by motor for Aria, a distance of somo 80 miles. It rained hard all day, and the difficulties of travel over back-block roads were well demonstrated) as the unmetalled portions of the roads eavo trouble in the:way of frequent skids. The little town was en fete for the occasion, practically all the residents for miles around turning out to welcome Sir Joseph Ward to tho district. He received deputations in the local hall, and was subsequently entertained at luncheon.

.. Sir Joseph Ward then motored to Piopio, and opened a new post and telegraph office. The town was bedecked with flags, and a hearty welcome was oxtended to the Minister, who received deputations and was entertained at tea.

At Te Kuiti in the evening Sir Joseph Ward was the_ guest of the Waitomo County Council and Borough Council at dinner, and later received deputations in tho Municipal Chambers. Tho Chamber of Commerce represented the unsatisfactory ftato .of tho tenure of township leases in-Tau-marunui, Otorohanga, and To Kuiti, and asked that the Government should' buy them up at their pre-war value-, or, in tho alternative; the Natives should ■be allowed' to treat individually as Europeans. In reply, the Minister said a matter of policy was involved, and he would place the representations before the Nativo Minister. Later the Minister was entertained at a jmoko enncert. There was a large gathering and the Mayor (Mr. G. P. Finlav) waa in the chair. The Minister left by the 11.30 p.m. train for Palmerston North.
