THE TURF
NOTES' AND COMMENTS
TBY GLENCOE.I .Nominations for all events at the Feildinff Meeting close at 8.30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Tho Spring MeetinE of the Avondale Jockey. Olulj will open on Saturday, and be concluded on the following Wednesday. I'eka's success in tho Wellington Handicap has entailed a penalty ol' 71b. in the New Zealand Oup. This will make liis weight 7st. 81b.
The V.K.C. Spring Meeting will'be opened at i'lemineton on Saturday, when amonsst other races the Derby ancj. Jielbourne Stakes will be run. Biplane is the fancy' for tho three-year-old classic, and as lie comfortably defeated Brouzotti and Tlirice at Handwick, he has met the best of the Victorian thrce-yeur-plds, and may have no difficulty in again kccountinK for them. The running in tho Melbourno Stakes is frequently a good line as to the result of the Cup. If tho imported Lanius, whoso score is so far two not out, is produced, he will doubtless be a hot order, and a win for him would cause him to harden still further in the Cup~ market.
Want is being sent south to contest the hurdie events at the coming Riccarton fixture. The Wairarapa Cup winner will probably be ridden by L. Trail, whose inquired Ghoulder is now auite mended. In Melbourne, sportsmen arc looking forward to a meeting between the two cracks Lanius and Biplane at Flemington. ■'l'he pair may meet on the third day in the 0. B. Fisher Plate, ono mile and a lialf, or on the fourth day in the Linlithgow St/kes, one mile. Probably the connections of the imported horse would prefer the meeting over twelve furlongs, while if it comes 00, E.' J. Mason may prefer the mile race. It is safe to sa- that there will be some very heavy wagering if a meeting between the pair does take place. The New Zoaland jockeys H. Thompson and H. Cairns were successful at the Caulfield Cup Meeting. The fprmer rodo l'inon to victory in the Ringwood Steeples, and Cairns was on Lanius, who won the Caulfield Stakes. Probably because they come to hand quickly, the progeny of Marble Arch has enjoyed several victories in the Avondale Stakes, which was usually the first two-ycar-old event of the season. This year, the Demosthenes colt Informal has had two races, so he will be meeting the rest of the Avondale Stakes Held' at a big advantage on Saturday. Marble Arch has four representatives iu the race, and Demosthenes a like number.
J, O'Shea has been riding work at Elicrslie during the past week. His injured arm is now mended, and he will be riding at Hiccarton on Monday next.
The Australian-bred Hopfield has been allowed to drop out of the Avondale Cup, but J. Thorpe's horse remains in the-i'ly-inß Handicap, iu which his weight is Bst. 111b. So far Hopfield has been a failure since cominß to the Dominion, but some of his Bandwick form was good enough to win first-class handicaps here.
Kilboy is perhaps hot a back number just yet. Before he left Randwiclc that opinion was formed of this line New Zcalander, but roport from Flemington show that he has resumed training, and it is believed by his connections that another preparation is not beyond him.
There is a story going the rounds in Australia to tho effect that the owners of Lanius were quite prepared to find that the handicapper had awarded that horse lOst. in the Melbourne Cup instead of 111b. less, and, if that be true, they are justified in regarding his prospects of success as being extremely rosy.
