DEPARTURE OF TROOPSHIPS

PUBLIC TO BE KEPT OFF TH> 1 WHARF. "Is it wise to allow people to know the day and hour of departure of transports?" This question was addressed to the Defence Minister by Dr. .Newman in the House of Representatives yesterday.

Sir James Allen said tliat the question was one of great importance. When tho last transports left crowds of people were oa the wharf, and they had to .be allowed to go through the barriers, 'i'iie people were alongside the ships for a. long time, and many things were passed on board. Probably these parcels were all safe, but the authorities were not in a position to say that they know them to be safe. The question was now raised as to whether it was safe for next-of-kin to go alongside transports at all, and this in the interests of the men themselves. He had, after consideration and advice, come to the conclusion that it was better to keep the barriers abso-; lutely closed, and to allow nobody through. Arrangements would be made to allow people to see the soldiers at the railway station and on the way from the station to the wharf.
