COST OF LIVING
COMMITTEE'S AMENDED REPORT. The amended report of the Cost of Living Committee was placed before the House of Representatives yesterday by the chairman (Mr. C. B. Statham). The original report had been referred back to the committee for reconsideration of a clause proposing to give a Food Controller authority .to buy foodstuffs at market rates, sell to the consumers at lower prices, and charge the loes to the Consolidated Fund. Mr. Statham said that the committee bad deleted tho proposal objected to by the House. It had also modifiod its proposal as to tho powers to bo conferred upon a Food Controller. The phrase "plenary powers" had been deleted The amended report was accepted by the House without discussion. A' supplementary report presented by Mr. T. K. Sidcy (Dimedin South) on behalf of the committee expressed appreeia. tion of the efficient manner in which Mr. Statham had directed tho investigations ■ of tho committee.
