WHARF PERMITS 4
THE GOVERNMENTS' PEOPOSALS. Mr. B. A: Wright (Wellington Suburbs) asked the Government whether it was intended to issue licences to enemy aliens to visit the wharves and shipping in the Dominion for business purposes; and whether, in view of the extreme danger to shipping, it would not be prudent to prohibit the issue of licences to such persons, whether naturalised or not. Sir James Allen (Slinister of Defence) replied that before licences were issued it was intended to fully inquire into tho antecedents and character of the aliens applying for them. It was not intended to issue licences to unnaturalised enemy aliens, but certain naturalised enemy aliens, who had been wording for many years in responsible positions, and even, in some oases, had sons fighting at the front, had some claim to consideration.
