WELLINGTON SOUTH AFFAIRS
*. The fourth annual meoting of the Wellington South Progressive Society was hold on Thursday night. Mr. 13. Cooper presided. , ' The ■ balance-sheet showed that the society jn financially sound and lias resources ample for -its immediate requirements. Tho report indicated that business generally is flourishing m tho Nowtown district, and that some mum. cipal improvements have been .elTecteil, while others have been planned and promised to be carried out soon. Mr. John Castle, secretary of the society, was congratulated on having been elected a city councillor, and th* mannernn which lie is discharging his municipal duties was commended. Dissatisfaction with tho management, of the Pethenck Museum and the public'hall in connection with the Newtown Public Library .was expressed; but proposed improvements were accepted as proniises_ of satisfaction. Improvements in the timetable of the running of tho trams Oiafr- pass through Newtown were suggested, and arrangements were made for those to be reduced to system and dealt with by the society's new executive. An elaborate proposal for the final arrangement of matters connected with the Basin Beserve was submitted by. Mr. GoodMr, and' the meeting, seeing that the buildin" of the Anglican Cathedral will give finality to some of these matters, which are of" great importance' to the public, appointed Mr. Goodger and the chairman aud the secretary of the society a committee to confer with the president and secretary of the Greater Wellington Town-Planning Association on the- possibility of readjusting property rights in the vicinity of the Basin Eeserve before that finality is reached. . Officers were elected as follow:—President, Mr. W. A. Worth; vice-presidents, Messrs. H. G. Bedell, F. W. Butler, A. A George, L, Goodger P. S. S. Oborn; secretary, Mr. J Castle; treasurer, Mr. A Crosby; auditor, Mr. E.. Brown, executive, Messrs. J. M. Bevendge, D. Campbell, J. Carroll, P. J. Caterer, H. B. Cooper, B. Collie, J. Heavoy, R. H. Jenkins. L. T. Wntkins, E. C. ludwig, E.' Read, and A. E. Wells.
