CORPORATION COAL

QUESTION OF ECONOMICAL HANDLING.

On the subject of the advisableness of handling coal at the tramways and lighting power houses with mechanical appliances, as previously suggested by Councillor J O. Shorland, the City Engineer (Mr. "IT. tl. Morton) last evening reported to the City Council that after careful consideration 'during the last few Jon is he was of opinion that it was not advisable to incur tho necessary expenuithe statements rtiade by members of tho Ministry," he said, it is almost certain thai; as soon as conditions will permit. Wellington will be eened by a hydro-electric supply, m ™ s <; tho amount of coal required to be handled would be approximately small as it. would, be required only for stand-by purposes. The coal required for other corporation purposes is not worth taking into consideration. If, on the other hand a satisfactory supply from hydro-electric sources could not be made availablo tor Wellington, then it would be necessary to consider the selection of another site for a combined power station for the whole of tho electric supply for the City of Wellington and adjacent &ueh a site should abut on the water front and have a proper means of handling coal and transporting it to overhead bunkers above the boilers. The generating units would be considerably larger than those at prosent in use, and very considerable saving could be effected. The principal waste in connection with the coal at present is in the space required to store "seiu stocks and the cost of cartage, from the various wharves. No satisfactory provi sion enn be made unless some arrangement is come to with the Harbour Board for ships with coal for the corporation to come lo ft convenient whart in. itie vicinity of the power station.
