GIRLS' HOCKEY

CANTERBURY BEATS MANAWATU WELLINGTON DEFEATS WAIRARAPA The ladies' hockey tourney was advanced another stage yesterday, when hyo more games were played ou the Basin Reserve. Canterbury defeated l!anawatu, rather luckily, and Wellington defeated Wairarapa. The attend race appeared to be larger than on tbo isrst day. The Can-terbury-Manawatu match was by far the better of the two. It was a brilliant game, fast and furious the whole time. Both teams played with fine combination, and thoy were very evenly matched. The hick was against Manawatu, and victory should have been theirs. They had numerous shots at the Canterbury goal, and repeatedly missed very narrowly. Hiss G. Barr scored tho first gocl tor Canterbury fairly early in kho game, and a little later Miss Collingwood scored ' for Manawatu. At half-time the scoro wna even. There was no addition to the score for some time the opening of the second spell, but at length Miss M. Pearce scored, as a result of some pretty forward play by Canterbury. Canterbury, 2; Manaivatu, 1. Towards the end of the game, Manawatu was attacking well, and Miss Green landed a goal. This brought the teams eventwo goals each. A drawn game seemed likely to be tho verdict, but, just on time, Mie3 Ritchie added another goal for Canterbury, trad the southerners left tlie field winners by 3 goals to 2. Messrs. J. C. Cusaok and A. I). Webb were the referees. The Wellington-Wairarapa match wae less exciting than the game which preceded it. tVairarapa played batter than on £he previous day, when they were almost overwhelmed by Manawatn. Wellington were much tho better team, but tlie visitors made a stubborn contest of it, and Wellington had no easy win. The city team had the best of tho first spell, but scored only two goals. These were obtained by Misses Williams and Gcddis. Waframpa opened the second epell with a strong attack, from which Miss Nix scored. Wellington, 2; Wairarapa, I. The game had 'bot progressed much farther when Miss Grant added a goal for Wellington, and Miss Knowles scored -for Wan-arapa. Wellington, 3; Wairarapa, 2. At this stage Wairarapa seemed to have 6ome chance of equalising matters, but Wellington rallied ineanwst, and Misses Lung and Williams scoted for the city. The game ended: Wellington, 5; Wairarapa, 2. The referees were- Messrs. L. Jackson and T. H. Hoclgson.
