CITY AFFAIRS
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Wellington City Council met last evening. There were present the Mayor (Mr. J. V. Luke), Councillors W. T. Hildroth, K. A. Wright, J. Castlo, J. 0. Shorlaml, C. B. Norwood, L. M'Kenzie, A. B. Atkinson, W. H. Bennett, J. Godber, G. Frost, W. 11. P. Barber, and W. J. Thompson. Water and drainage facilities are to be extended to certain sections, at Tirangi Road, Kilbirnie, as 60011 as men can be spared to do the work, the estimated cost of frhicli is .£46.
Inspector Greeks, at present engaged a,s ranger and sanitary inspector for the outlying districts, is to be confined to ranging duties, and.an additional sanitary inspector is to be engaged/for the outlying districts.
The Terrace School is to be admitted to the school library scheme at tho commencement of 1918.
The only tender received for the library periodical contract for the year 1918 (from Messrs. Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd.) was accepted, as recommended by tho chief librarian. Tho Ontlying , Districts Committee reported that they had received communications from i the City. Engineer and City Solicitor with reference to the commencement by the Hataitai Land Company of the construction of a new street in Hataitai, named Bakau Eoad. The officers reported that the company alleged that tho correspondence of 1900 and the agreement in iSOfi giave consent to the construction of the street. This new was absolutely contradicted by the City Solicitor. The committee recommended that the council inform tho company that the construction of this street and the subdivision of tho land adjacent thereto will require to be dealt with as a new proposal, and the works (to include the layimr of stonn-wnter drains, water mains, and' the construction of a satisfactory connection between Knkasi Bond with Hatoitai Road), would requireJo be carried out to the complete satisfaction or the City Engineer wiflini apenod to be determined by the council.. The company would also require to satisfactorily construct that portion of Wailoa Boadi be- ! tireen the northern boundary ot section 60 to the junction with Ealcau Eoad. r\ was decided: "That after Messrs.
