1 CHARGE OF SLANDER Hie Honour Jfr. Justice HoBldn;; and a jury of liwclvo yosterda-y heard, an action for .€IOSO damages ajpun&t Arthur Waldomar Sohacf, photographer; of Vivian Street. .The plaintiffs wore Isabel and Gladys Davcy, two young women who had foJ> morly occupied premises owned by Si'-haof. In a recent caso in the Magistrate e Court 6chaef sued the present plaintiff* for rent overdue, and also demanded possession of the rooms they occupied. In support of his claim, lio alleged that the Daveys wore conducting a, house of lllfamo. Schaef recovered his rent, but tno Magistrate.did not find that anything- was proved against the character of tho girls. Yesterday gehaef's allegations were mado the subject of the case against him. Mr. -T. Young appeared for the plaintiffs, and ITr. T. IT. Wilford for the defendant.. ■
Mr. Young, in opening, said that dfffendnflt professed to have seen the plaintiffs commitlCTK unchaste nets. . Evidence as to tho good character borno by the girls (who mado their living as ilrcss-mnke-rs) would bo called. Isabel Dnrcy stated in the course of her evidence that tho defendant turned nasty after she had refused to listen to wmnirful suijeertions from him
Justification was alleged for the defence. . Schnef entered the witness-box and repented his asßwtioue that he had seen the eirls mißoondtictins themselves on tno premises. His observations bad been made by thp aid of a ladder and a fanlight. Tho cow w.iji not completed when the "Court adjourned.
