ATHLETIC PARK

CITY RATES REMITTED. A few days ago a deputation waited on Hie Finance Committee of .tho City Council requesting that in view of tho effort that was being made to retain the Athletic Park, in Eintoul Street, for Rugby football, that tho whole of the city rates be remitted. Last evening the ..committee reported to the council as under:—

"That they have received a deputation from the representatives© of tho Athletic Park Retention Fund Committee and the New Zealand Sports Protection League on the subject of tho remission of rates on tho Athletic Park during tho period of the war and for six months afterwards. Tho present remission granted by the council is iho general rate on the Park, amounting to .£lOl 10s. 6d., and tho amount now asked lo be remitted is an additional .£O2 Its. In tho opiniou of this committee tho ground is to ail intents and purposes a public recreation ground, and Elicy havo lo recommend that tho application bo granted. The committee havo also to recommend that tho request of tho Park Retention Fund Committee for tho frco use of the Town Hall on a date to lio fixed for a war lcclnro V Mr. T. M. AVilford M.P., in aid of tho f unds to retain tho Park, be granted." Without any discussion tho council approved tho recommendation.
