LAST NIGHT'S DECISIONS In the absence of the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), who was attending a social function elsewhere, the chair at the meeting ot the City Council last evening was taken by Councillor W. H. P. Barber. . There were present: Councillors J. Castle. ■ V 7.. J. Thompson, J. O. Shorland, 0. B. Norwood. J. E. Fitzgerald. W. Hildreth, J. Godbcr. IT. 11. Bennett, A. R. Atkinson, IT. F. Lucliie,- and h. M'Kenzic. Finance committee. On the recommendation of the Finance Committee the following recommendations were approved:— "That two storm-water drains at Ross Streot bo declared nublio drains, as rcauested by the Onepu Land Company." "That tho council take over as a Dublio sewer, tho common drain throueh nrivate property to which four houses lia-ve been erected at the oorner of Stanley aiv Morton Streets, and also extend the sewer through to the boundary of tho property owned by tho Levin Memorial Home." Baths, Libraries, and Beaches, On the recommendation of the Baths. Libraries, and Beaches Committee, the following decisions wero aereed to:— "That a deputation from the Wellington Boys' Institute waited on the committee to ask for a subsidy of £200 towards tho up-kcep of tho institute's tepid baths. The committee have Dostnonod consideration ot tho request until the balance-sheets of the institute are examined." "That they have been waited on by a deputation from the Island Bay Municipal Electors' Association who requested:— 1. That better supervision be gives to the Island Bay beach. 2. That washing and fishermen's nets be kept off the beach. 3. That increased bathing facilities be granted to tho women bathetß. 4. That steps be taken to keep the beach free from broken bottles and glass." The matters have been referred to a subcommittee for roport. Tho committee will forward their recommendations to the next mcetins of, the council. By-Laws, Fire Brigade, and Street Lighting. The followiuc recommendations of the By-laws, Fire Brigade, and Street Lighting Committee were adopted:— "That a taxi-cab driver reported for driving to tho danger of .the public in Brandon Street ou August 10, be severely reprimanded for his indiscretion. That the Petone Borough Council be informed in reply to their application for a reduction in the licence tee charged for their motor-bus engaged in carrying passengers from Petone to \yellington; that it is regretted that tho request cannot be acceded to." "That the Wellington Harbour Board be granted permission to erect a temporary woodcu buildini; for the storage of cheese at the King's Wharf breastwork, although such building does not comply with the City's building regulations, subject to tho building remaining only for a period not exceeding seven years, and at the end of such period, any application for an extension of the consent to he then considered." (The building is being erected under agreement with the New Zealand Government and the above conditions are suggested by tho City Engineer.) "That the council adhere to the terms of their previous decision in tho case of a renewed application for permission to erect certain dwellings ou subdivided land at Hornsey ltoad, i.e., that consent to erect the buildings be not granted." "That an aunlicntiou for permission to place a petrol-fllliug box on the footpath in Wakefield Street in connection with a Bowser petrol storage tank at premiscß in such street, be refused owing to tho likelihood of obstruction to traffic and the danscr arising from the exposure. of the spirit, and also that the applicants be informed that the Fire Underwriters' Association is being written to and requested to modify its regulations in order to permit the owners to Oil the tank from the interior of tho building." "That the users of the Dixon Street taxicab stand bo permitted to move the :iead of the stand to a position not less than ten feet from the intersection of Cuba Street, after the closing hours of shops, viz:—6.3o p.m. on week days, except Friday: 9 p.m. on Fridays; 1.30 p.m. on Saturdays."
