QUIVERING SAMOA
SCAHCELY A DAY WITHOUT A ! 'QUAKE. Since the great earthquake nearly three weeks ago there lias been scarcely a day without one or more series of oscillations being felt (says the "Samoa Times" of July 14). The vibrations experienced about 11.15 on Wednesday morning wore both prolonged and severe, extending intermittently over a couple of minutes, and shaking buildings iu such an alarming manner that many persons sought' safety in the open. The alacrity with, which in some cases this was accomplished testified in unmistakable fashion that tho after-effects of the panic feeling of three weeks ago have net yet been wholly effaced. This same nervous apprehension was unfortunately accentuated by a statement, circulated iu the first instance by certain persons with a bent towards the practical joke, that scientific predictions had been made foreshadowing another earthquake of stupendous proportions on or about, the 13tii. The alleged prediction was widely circulated and accepted ill good faith by tho credulous, and its falsification should assist materially to restore equanimity among those of excessively nervous temperament m the community.
