MEETING OF THE COUNCIL The Wellington City Council mot last night. The Mayor '(Mi-. J. P. Luke), Councillors W. T. HildTotb, J.E. Fitzgerald, R, A. Wright,. J.-Castle, W. J. Thompson, C. B. Norwood, J. 0. Shorland, M. P. Luclrie, A. R. Atkinson, W. H. Bennett, J. Godber, G. Frost, W. H. I'. Barber, and L. M'Kenzie were present. The Presbyterian l Orphanage authorities aro to V>o informed, in reply to their request for the improvement of tho road across the Town Belt giving access to tlieir premises, that it is regretted that corporation money cannot be spent on fno maintenance or improvement of the road. Authority was granted for tho renewal of the following storm-water drains whicTi recently collapsed:—Mosham Ave-' ivue, near Church of. England; Scarborough Terrace to Austin Street; Holloway Road, Mitcholltown; culvert running through corporation yard. Provision was made on this year's estimates for tho renewal of the Holloway Road and" corporation yard drains,, and alt tho works are said to bo urgent. The name proposed to bo given to the new street oft' Resolution Street, xiz., Punt Street, was not accepted, owing to tho similarity of the name to Toru Street, Lyall Bay, and Poro Street, Kilbirnie. ' ■

It was reported (hat tho City Solicitor lift*! been" instructed to draft legislation necessary lo cancel the dedication of land at Hamilton and Busuco Roads, lCilbirni'e, made by tho Coniplon Estate, and to nrorido for the exemption of Hamilton Road from the provisions of. tho "Public Works Act, 190S, on the condition tliat no building is erected within thirtyIh'reo feet bf the centre , line of the street, and also the unconditional exemption ofßusaco Road, as directed at the last meeting of the council. : The City- Solicitor has also been ■ instructed to arrange for the legislation necessary to give effect to the agreement between*tho Railway Department. Rhodes Trustees, and the Wellington City Corporation, providing for the extension of William Street, Wadestown, over tho Government railway lines, as directed by tiin council. The request of the.;Kelburn Ratepayers* Association that. Springfield and North Terraces be beautified th.is year was not acceded to. The council; however, will permit the residents of Springfiel.fl Terrace to '■undertake the'work if tTTey are really desirous of improving tho appearance of the terrace. With -regard lo North Terrace, the objection to money being, spent .on the" beautifying at present is on account of the .City Engineer requiring to carry out improvements to North Terrace in +.lie future wlifch would inlerfere with the present planting proposal. The Wadestown Municipal - Electors' Association is to be informed that action is being taken to deal with their complaint regarding wandering cattle in Wadestown. The Melrose'Electors' Association is to be informed that while the council recognise that works asked for would be of considerable benefit to the district, it is regretted that there is insufficient money available for the purpose this year.
