The weather was so bad at, Trentnam on Saturday that trainers were unable to gallop their charges. Those who moTCd south with their teams after the Wellington Meeting are getting much the best of things, as the weather at Riccarton 1 lias ■been much better, and tho grass tracks are regularly available. A Ohristchurch writer states that Thames is a doubtful starter in the Winter Cup. i After galloping at Riccarton on Thitfsday tho Winter Oup oandidatc, Cherry Blossom, was distinctly lame,-and Shears-' by may experience difficulty In getting last year's winner to the post, His other charge, Sleight-of-Hand, whose special mission is tho National Hurdles, in which he will be riaden hv A. M'Donald, is Rotting through a lot of pleasing schooling work. i It is reported in the south that Pis'- j mouth is to be sent to Eandwick to con- < test the steeplechase events at the Spring Meeting. A unique betting incident occurred at a. recent Parkes Trotting Club's (N.S.W.) meeting. Rot a single ticket was taken out on Hockage, winner of the last eveoti of the day, and there wns only one on Lady Kanji, the runner-up.
Commenting on the handicaps issued for the Australian Steeplechase "TerlitlKa thinks that despite their rise in weight, Cnibye, Old Mungindi and Waimai must all have great chances, and kuggests that the New Zealander may turn the tables on the other pair.
On and after Wednesday next all horses located south of the Line will rank as a year older. It is, in fact, the equine birthday" for the Southern Hemisphere.
In moving the motion at the recent conference to the effect that no jockey should give information respecting a trial or regarding any horse he might be engaged to ride in any race or in work, to any person other than the owner or trainer of the horse, Bir George Clifford stated that no penalty was provided for a breach of the rule, and explained that the main purpose was to direct, the attention of jockeys to their duty in such mattery. As previously stated th-'s rule was passed, and the report of any of the stipendiaries thereon on the manner in whioh the same has operated will be awaited with not a little interest. In previous years it was rare to find a horse engaged in the Winter Cup and New Zealand Grand National Hurdle . Race, when those events were run on different days; but notwithstanding that tho events in question are this year BCt down to be run on the same day. Eewi Poto figures in both races. It is a popular opinion that the Manianoto gelding will be found amongst the startere for the Grand National Hurdle Race.
At Ellerslie A. J. M'Flynn has been riding work regularly of late, and will probably undertake to school horses during the week, when he will decide as to his fitness to complete Kiccarton engacementii. Should he undertake the southern trip he will have the ride on Fisher in the Grand National Hurdles.
The Auokland horseman S. Henderson has recovered sufficiently to leave his room, and will steer Marconi and Gluenot in their Biccarton engagements if his condition permits Mm. A Press Association message from Sydney states that during the :nnning of the Canterbury Park Maiden Handicap nine horses fell in a heap. Six jockeys were injured, three of them seriously.
