WAR HONOURS

TS THERE ANY OTHER LIST? A question regarding the honours given to New Zealand soldiers after the Battle of Messines was asked in the House yesterday by Mr. D. Buddo. From the lists published, said Mr. Buddo, it appeared that there had been 4500 casualties, and some 190 casualties to officers. In the honours list it was announced that 47 officers had been awarded the D.S.O. and the Military Cross, while 18 noncommissioned officers and only (right privates were mentioned at all. He vislied to know; whether the Minister bad ajiy other list to come. He was not concerned only with the privates who had not been given menials, but also with the officers who had received them. But the difference in the number of awards given to officers and to men was such that there should be an explanation. Mr. Poland: What else do you expect? Mr. Hinclmarsh:' Honours are not worth having now owing to favouritism. That is well known.

Mr. I'mldo asked the Minister whether lie had any other list of .honours which could be made public in connection with the engagement at Messines. Sir .Tames Allen said that he could not answer from memory as to what list* had been received, or how mony medals had been awarded. He did know that .there had been over 5000 casualties. He aslced Mr. Buddo to Rive notice of his question, and this Mr. Buddo did.
