By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, June 18. At a meeting of the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce to-day the following resolution was paesed:— "That this'council views with, profound alarm the attempt now being made to transfer the greatest shipping industry in New Zealand to a control not responsible to the people of this Dominion, and that the Government be urg«l to use all the means in its power to prevent the acquisition, virtual or otherwise, of the. business of the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand by the P. and 0. Company of Britain, and further to tale efficient steps to prevent the control of any other essential industry of New Zealand, passing outside the influence of its people."'
