The Hon. G. W. TJussell will return to Wellington on Sunday morning. The Hon. J. A. Haiian left for the south last evening. The Rev. 11. Van Staveren has been granted a month's leave of absence by the Hospital and Charitable Ai'l Board. With Mrs. Van Staveren and Mis 3 iiiii Van Staveren he leaves on n trip to Australia at an early date. Captain R, Neville, of the Union Steam Ship Company, who is widely known in shipping circles, is retiring after spending 41 years in the Union Company's service (says the "Otago Daily Times"). Ho entered it as second officer, and during the last 34 years he has been master, at 0110 time or another,- of practically every steamer in the company's service. He is one of the best-known and most popular captains in Australasian waters. ( In recognition of his long services tho directors of tho Union Company made Captain Neville a presentation at Donedis. on Monday. In makinsr the presentation. Mr. John Roberts, C.M.G. (acting-chair-man of directors) referred to his long record of service, and voiced the cornpanv's regret that Captain Neville reached tho time for retiring. Cable advice has been received by Mrs. Wells, Moncks Bay, Christchurch, that Lieutenant Edwin ft. Wells (6th Reinforcements), from . France, and C.M.S\ Clirys H. Wells (Main Body), from Palestine, are both on leave in London. The resigntion of Mr. Mantell, as honorary dental 6urgeon o£ the Wellington Hospital, has been received with regret. Dr H. T7. Cleary, Roman Catholic "Bishop of Auckland, has been appointed by the Pope an assistant bishop of the Pontifical throne. He is the only Australasian prelate now holding this distinction. It was held by the late Bishop Dunne (Milcannia), by the late Bishop ReviHe, and by the late Archbishop Carr, all of whom have died within the last sis months.

The Hon. Joseph Duffell, M.L.C., of Perth, West Australia, has arrived m Auckland.

Mr. S. Robinson, acting-secretary of fche Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, was unable to be present at yesterdays meeting of the board. The chairman said that he regretted that Mr. Robinson had had to be relieved of his work, owing to an attack of pleurisy. Mr. R. Brown is at present performing the duties of acting-secretary.

-The death occurred at Wanganui on Saturday morning of Mr. John Pawson, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. W. Rodwell, Dune Hill. The late Mr. Pawson was 85 years of .age, and 'was one of the best-known citizens of the town. He was born at Doncaster, England. Mr. Pawson was one of the oldest Freemasons in the Dominion.

Mrs. Mary Butler, relict of the late Edward Butler, county engineer. Greymouth, died at her residence, Tmakon Iloail m Thnrsdav afternoon. She leaves a familv of four-Dr. Butler, of Chicago, }[ r . J. "B. Butler of Tauranga. and the Misses Mary and Margaret Butler, of this city.

Sub-Lieutenant Nicholas Greenwell. of the Imperial Flying Corps, has arrived in Xev." Zealand. Mr. Greenwell, Huntly, is the next-of-kin of lieutenant Greenwell. i

Rifleman John Donald M'Beth, I\o. 13,691, has returned on duty to New Zealand from the front. Mrs. C. B. 11 Beth, Carlton Avenue, Wanpanui. is the next-of-kin of the returned soldier.

Mrs. A. H. Waters, of No. 2 Boulcott Terrace, was formally presented yesterday afternoon by the Hod. Sir James Mien fActing-Prime Minister and Minister of Defence) with the Special Service Decoration forwarded to her by the Navy League (London) in recognition of her services in connection with the raisI ing of tho fund for the dependants of those who lost their lives in the Jutland battle. The decoration, which is a very handsome one, consists of a silver bar, bearing the words "Special Service, from which depends » dark rubton, to which is attached a Maltese CroS3 with a circular shield in the centre, which is engraved the motto of the league "Keep 'Watch.", It is understood that only two other similar decorations have been granted to Wellington citizens -one to Mr. Robert Darroch and one to Mr. C. W. Palmer (late secretary of the local Navy League).
