ALL FOR EMPIRE LEAGUE
'A special meeting of the committee of the All For Empire League (Wellington Centre) was held in the Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, afternoon, Mr. F. W. Manton occupying the chair, in the absence of the president, Mr. James Macintosh. _ The meeting was called at shortvnotice, to endorse tho action of -the president and other members of the executive in regard to an urgent cable message received from London, to which it was desired an immediate reply should be sent. The cablegram in question was read by tho secretary (Mr. A. J. Charlton) as follows:—"London, March 27. —Secretary, All For Empire League, Victoria Street. British Empire Producers' Association, Massey, patron, Ward, vice-president, representing industries of whole Empire,, shortly presenting- memorial to Imperial War Cabinet, advocating tariff preference within Empire for development, resources to render Empire self-supporting and independent of foreign control. Over soventy industrial associations representing United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Now Zealand, South Africa, India, Crown colonics, already signed. If you authorise us attach your signature cable' word 'authorise.' Also hope you can enlist support of Warehousemen's and Commercial Travellers' Association for_ same purpose." The chairman explained that the cablegram had been submitted, immediately on its receipt, to the president, who had endorsed it:—"l am in favour of an immediate reply 'being sent assenting James Macintosh"; to Mr; Morison, who added "I agree. C. B. Morison," and he (the chairman) had similarly endorsed it. The reply had been sent, and it was now necessary that the aijnimitteo should consider their action. As the memorial covered one of the objects which the All For Empire League had made part of its platform, no other reply than that sent was, in his opinion, possible.' Mr. \S. Jacobs moved that the action taken; by the president and other members of .the executive, in cabling approval of the memorial, be confirmed. The motion was seconded by Mr. M. A. Carr, and carried unanimously. Tho chairman said there were other matters which should he discussed, but, as the attendance was smaller than they expected, it would be better to call a full,, meeting of .the committeo as soon after the holidays as possible, and a suitable evening had better he chosen for that purpose, as it ,was necessary,, if they were to repeat the successful Empire Day celebrations of last year, that they should get to work, immediately. . This was agreed to.
