WOMEN GARDNERS
ACTION BY CITY COUNCIL. Thais is work ahead for willing wo* men in Wellington who have enthusiasm for gardening. A good lead is, being Riven' by tho City Council, all. the members of which favour the en* couragement of women to take up the! work. At last evening's meeting Reserves Committee reported that,' they had received a proposal from Dr< Platts-Mills, president of tho /Women s ( National Reserve, and that the cil agreed to give capabW women the . privilege of being taugnS such gardening work as the Buperin-i tendent of reserves deemed and after (say) three months, or longo? if necessary, these women to be paid according to qualifications. The ■ superintendent of reserves favoured thej suggestion, and the committee recomj mended that the Women's National! Reserve and Miss Birch, of tha Y.W.C.A., be informed tha.t the coun. oil! are prepared to give a limited num-j ber of women, recommended by these organisations, such tuition as the siw perintendent of reserves may deem- desirable, and after they have served tlieir probationary period, they could; be assured that if there were any apj pointments in the service, that, in tha opinion of the Eeserve Committor could be satisfactorily filled by these women, the.V would get the appoint-) ments, but tho cotmcil_ was .not to' be placed under any obligation, moral or, otherwise, to give them employment after the expiration' of their training period. The question of appointments would be governed-by the exigencies o! the situation from time to time. The recommendation was adopted. .
