Reinforcements; were sailing, to the front had been; sunk, and that a Wairarapa man had received advice from his son to that he was- the sole survivor. As; the 23rd Reinforcements are still ioj Featherston Camp it was obvious that; the rumour was incorrect in detail, but) it was suggested that it might apply;to tlio 21st draft, now on the water. The Minister of Defence heard yesterday that the 21st Mounted Rifleß dtaft,. to whom the story was. supposed to ap»! ply, were safe. v , • '"I assure the public," said Sir James Allen, "that if any information came to me about a loss I should immediately make it known. T think people may safely disregard any idle ru-j wours they hear from other sources. ' These rumours have been extremely: vexatious on several occasions recent-i ly, causing a. great deal. of distress to the relatives of men on th 6 partiou' lar ships mentioned in the reports. Thai only particle of truth iu this last story-; Tvas that a soldier wlio "had sailed, in the ship had cabled to his father to say that he was well.
