WHEAT CULTURE
MINISTER APPEALS TO FARMERS
AN OFFER OF AID
A statement about ivheat culture in New "Zealand was made by the Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald (Minister of Agrioulture) yesterday. "I find that it is not generally understood that tho Government has guaranteed a price of ss. sd. per bushel, f.0.b., with a maximum of ss. 10d. for the 191718 .crop," lie said. "Tho preparing of the proclamation to give effect to this decision is now in the lianda ■of the Crown Law Office.
i "I realise that the farmers are confronted witli a very great'difficulty in I regard to securing labour, but the J Agricultural Department will be pre- \ pared to give all possible assistance to J farmers to help them over this difficulty. I would also be prepared to consider advice as to the procuring of more up-to-date machinery, in. , the way of tractors, for instance, for sowing the seed and harvesting the crops. lam not going to say that the prices we are offering are a big inducement at all to farmers to sow •wheat, but they are yrices which would have been considered payable in pre-war times, and I am hoping that every farmer who, has wheat land, and can possibly carry on wheatgrowing, will look at the matter from a national point of view. It is very important that we should produce within the country at least sufficient wheat to suffice for the needs of our own people during the ■Wβ! , ."
