PETONE AFFAIRS
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING.
Last evening's meeting of the Pttone Borough Council was presided over by Mr. J. W. M'Ewan, Mayor. The secretary of the Municipal Band applied for and was granted permission for 'a Sunday concert in the Grand Theatre, and to take up ■ a collection for the benefit of the Uniform Fund.
James Stone, who wrote that he had had his bicycle broken in an accident caused by a hydrant projecting above the level of the road, asked the council for compensation. The letter was simply received, and no action was taken.
The town clerk, Auckland, forwarded information regarding the cost of the ohildren's gymnastic apparatus in Myer'si Park. The Mayor said that no purchase of apparatus was provided for in the estimates this year, and no money was available for such a purchase. The "matter might be considered next year. The engineer was instructed to report upon the cost of erecting certain apparatus in the recreation ground. ■.•-... .-
A resolution was received from the Mackenzie County Council, urging that the Government impose a Customs duty of not less than 10 per cent, ad valorem on' motor-cars, and that tho revenue so raised be applied to the upkeep of roads. The resolution received tlie council's support.
The Minister of Defence advised that instructions had been given to the Defence Department to formulate proposals for the classification of men : n the Second Division'. Before men in the Second Division are balloted for, the Minister stated, those in the First Division whose cases have been adjourned sine die will bo reviewed by the Military Service Board.
Mention was made of complaints that wandering stock were destroying fpneos. otc, in-a particular quarter of the town. It was decided to have the matter attended to.
Legal opinion was submitted upon tho question of whether the council had an notion for over-charge npainst the vendor of a vehicle recently purchased. The opinion was that thp council had no grounds of action, and could not recover.
