Arthur Marmaduke Shields, a i Hawke's Bay sheep-farmer, was drown- : ed yesterday while bathing in Sponge : Bay. He only arrived.on Saturday to spend a few days with his family. He ! leaves a widow and four children. ■ OVERDOSE OF CHLORODYNE. Auokland, February 26. Arthur John Harris, aged 42, died in the hospital from an overdose of chloro- '. dyne. FATE OF A CYCLIST. Ashburton, February 26. William Henry M'Kee, a single man, aged 33 years; was found dead in a water race on tho Alford Forest Road early this morning. Ho had been riding a bicycle and had fallen off and been drowned. When discovered his head was in the race, and his feet on tho culvert. DROWNED.FROM A LAUNCH. .Christchurch; February 26. The body of Philip Edwin Fluerty, drowned with Charles Heard while fishing from Sunnier in a launch on February 6, was found floating near Sumner on Saturday night. At an inquest the evidence showed that the boat, in a heavy south-wester, was taken in tow by an overseas steamer. ' Nearing Lyttelton, it is understood, tho forepart of the boat parted. A marine inquiry lias been held, but the result is not to'hand from Wellington. The Coroner said he would ascertain the result of the inquiry, but no doubt the parting of the boat had caused the mishap. He would return a verdict of drowned through such accident.' DEATH FOLLOWING A FALL.' Dunertin, February 26. The hoy Ernest Joyce, who was found Iving on tho-road near Saddle Hill on Saturday, died to-niaht. Joyce was found unconscious, , suffering from a fractured skull and elbow. He had been thrown from a horse and dragged along the road: His father lives at Mosgiel. , . SURF BATHER DROWNED. . , Walhi, February. 26. William Patten, aged 32, was accidentally drowned yesterday while surf bathing at Waihi beach. A party cf four got into difficulties in big. quick, successive rollers. A strong ebb tide rendered rescue difficult. Three of the party were got out by the aid of a life-line, but Patten, after a long strugcle, finally disappeared 300 yards from the shore; Deceased came from Australia, . and was. a widower <Vith three young children living in Ballarat. MOTOR-CAR ACCIDENT. Councillor J. S. M'Pougall, of Lower Hutt, was severely injured by being knocked down by, a motor-car' on the Lower. Hutt Bridge at about 7.30 o'clock last evening. Councillor M'Dougall was walking along the main bridge to a meeting, of the council, when his hat blew away. He was about to recover it, when he was knocked over by a motor-car, which was driven by a man named Ernest Jessop, • of Lower Hutt. Jessop tried to bring his car to an immediate standstill, but ho was unable to do sp in time to prevent Councillor M'Dougall from receiving a compound fracture of the right thigh, an injury to his right arm, and ether bruises. The injured man was admitted to the Wellington Hospital. ■SCHOOLBOY INJURED. A, boy named Partland, eight years of age, residing at 296 Tinakori Eoad, while playing in tho Marist Brothers' schoolground yesterday morning, was knocked down by another boy and sustained injuries to his head. He was admitted to'the Hospital at 8 o'clock last
