BOOKMAKER FINED
BETTING ON LICENSED PUEMISES. In tho Magistrate's Court yesterday Mr. W. G. lliddell, S.M., delivered reserved judgment iu tho case iu which Krank Burke was charged on two illformations under the Gaming Act' that bein" a bookmaker did bet on the licensed premises of tlie Hotel Cecil on November 16 and 23 last. Mr. 1. M. "Wilford, at the: hearing, raised tho point as to whether his client could be regarded us a bookmaker when the alleged transactions ,took place. Certain legal points were raised, and Mr. Itiddell said that as regards tho first charge he was not satisfied that at the time of the first transaction Burko was a bookmaker. On tho second charge, however, tho matter was different, and on this charge tho accused was coiw victed and- fined £20, the minimum penalty fixed by the Act.
