CARTERTON NEWS
A concert, the programme of which is being provided by talent from the' Featlierston Camp, is to he given in Carterton on Monday evening next. Tlie proceeds are to be divided between the Carterton Citizens and Settlers'' Entertainment Committee ' and the P.W.M.TJ. _ Committee, * both of which organisations aro always working for tho benefit of the soldiers. ■ Rain in the Wairarapa district continues to be conspicuous by its absence, and the lands everywhere show a parch-ed-up appearance. Sheep en route for the freezing works pass through Carterton daily, almost every train having a consignment aboard. As showing tho importance of Taratalii, occasioned by the operations of the Wellington Farmers' Moat Co.'s works there, the Railway Department has installed a tablet station with a porter in charge. A 1 staff of mon aro at present engaged making improvements to the roadway at tho Dalefield Railway* Station. Th.e settlers, through tho medium of the South Wairarapa County Council, are contributing.£lso towards the cost of the work. Mr. Taplin, who has been on tho staff of tho local Agricultural Department. leaves shortly for the " South Island. On Saturday nest tho Hydro-Electric Investigation Committee will meet at Hasterton to receive tho sub-commit-tee's report and consider tho finance. This State schools in the Wairarapa reopen nest week after <v six weeks' vacation.
